Who is Maya Murphy?

Maya’s character is a mix of my experiences as a paramedic and those of the women I have worked with. She is a fictional character that shows incredible strength and profound vulnerability.

I started working as a paramedic when I was 26 years old. I was full of enthusiasm and excited about saving lives and serving my community. I’ve always been a risk taker and being a paramedic seemed like the perfect combination of altruism and adrenaline.

The emergency calls I've described in the novel are variations of calls I've responded to over the course of my career. During my time as a paramedic, I’ve just about seen it all, gunshot wounds; car crashes; childbirth; cardiac arrests… but not everything. Just when I thought I’d seen it all, that call would come in that would prove me wrong.

It’s that intensity that I tried to portray in the medical calls and the work environment that Maya experienced. In her character I wanted to show how a competent, strong paramedic can still be caught off guard by an unprecedented event. An event that shattered her sense of having it all under control.
